COME FROM AWAY

Jennifer Werner is in talks to helm several reimagined co-productions of the musical Come From Away in upcoming seasons, building on her recent staging of the show at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

The musical, written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, tells the remarkable true story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, which welcomed nearly 7,000 airline passengers after U.S. airspace closed during the September 11 attacks. Rather than focusing on tragedy, Come From Away highlights the generosity and compassion that emerged as residents opened their homes and hearts to strangers from around the world.

Werner previously directed the musical at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, where the production centered on the piece’s signature ensemble storytelling. With a cast of twelve actors portraying dozens of characters—from stranded travelers to the residents of Gander—the show relies on rapid transformations, minimal staging, and the strength of its ensemble to bring the story to life.
The upcoming co-productions will build on Werner’s work with the material while exploring fresh staging approaches and collaborative processes with each partner theater. The goal of the reimagined productions is to preserve the emotional core of the musical while allowing each staging to respond to the unique community and artists involved... much like the story of the musical itself.
Since its Broadway premiere in 2017, Come From Away has become one of the most widely produced contemporary musicals, resonating with audiences through its message of kindness, resilience, and unexpected human connection.
Additional details about the participating theaters and production timeline will be announced in the coming months.
